Alcaraz Ready to Battle Non-Professionals in Million Dollar Single-Point Showdown

Amateur players are getting an opportunity to earn A$1m when they take on tennis' top professionals - headed by leading player Carlos Alcaraz - in a winner-takes-all point prior to the Australian Grand Slam

Tournament officials of the Melbourne major have unveiled the $1 Million Single-Point Tournament, which will match everyday competitors against 22 professionals in a knockout tournament at the Australian Open venue

This Innovative Competition Operates

Participants must play 'the decision-making game' to determine who serves or receives, and whoever wins the point will move forward to the following stage

The victor of the event will earn a significant cash prize

For comparison, players who advanced to the penultimate round of the primary tournaments in the 2025 Australian Open won over a million Australian dollars

The New York major organized a restructured, separate combined gender tournament in the eighth month which prompted top singles players to take part, with the victors receiving one million US dollars

The year's first major held its inaugural single-point competition earlier this year, but the prize fund was sixty thousand Australian dollars and it received minimal attention

Andrey Rublev was the only top-10 player involved, and his progress finished when he sent the one and only serve granted failing to clear the net in his last eight match

Competition Information

Officials have not detailed exactly how the event will operate, but it is expected to emulate a similar format to this year's edition

The top competitors will be granted to have a single serve and the everyday players on two occasions - as is the norm in standard play

While it is not certain how the draw will work, there will be five knockout rounds and the location will be the Rod Laver Arena rather than the alternative court

The last matches will be held in a nighttime schedule instead of 1pm local time

Participation Details

Domestic competitors - or overseas competitors who have signed up with the governing body - can enter 'One Point Slam' competitions at their community centers

The victors of the community events will then go into a random pairing, with one amateur player from every region and area picked to compete in the 'final competition' in a night session on mid-January

There will also be a preliminary competition in late year which everyday players, lower ranked pros, celebrities and sports personalities can enter

It starts on early January and the pair of champions will advance to the following day's 'final showdown' with the remaining non-professionals and elite competitors

"No matter your experience, the ultimate winner will walk away with the award. Applications will begin shortly at facilities throughout the nation"

Tournament officials stated there were "more big names to be revealed shortly", while the event portal mentioned "well-known figures" would be taking part
