Ashes Pre-Series Trash Talk Escalates as Broad Calls Australian Team the Worst After 2010

The pre-Ashes verbal sparring is escalating further, with ex-England bowler Broad stating that England will face "probably the worst Australian team in over a decade" on tour this winter.

Warner's Confident Forecast Answered by Doubt

The former England bowler's claim was in response to David Warner – a long-time Ashes rival – predicting a clean sweep for the home side. "If the captain [Pat Cummins] doesn’t play, they might win one game," Warner commented.

Australia have not lost a men’s Ashes match on home soil after England's 3-1 victory in 2010-11. Their 5-0 win three years later – on the back of seven defeats in their previous nine Tests – was followed by 4-0 Ashes triumphs in 2017-18 and 2021-22.

Team Doubt and Injury Concerns for the Hosts

However, the top-ranked Test team, who have suffered just a single defeat of their last thirteen series, enter the upcoming assignment with uncertainty over the composition of their top order and the health of Pat Cummins, who is unlikely to feature in the first Test at Perth because of a back injury.

"It's extremely challenging to win in Australia as an English team, or any visiting team," said Broad during his podcast. "Australia have to be massive favourites."

"The Aussies face the greatest expectations because they’re expected to win, they’re formidable in home conditions, but they’ve got question marks over their squad and question marks over their skipper's condition. You wouldn’t be outlandish in believing – this isn't merely a view, it’s a fact – it is likely the weakest Aussie lineup since 2010. And it’s the best English team in over a decade. These factors point towards the fact that it’s going to be a thrilling Ashes series."

Comparison to 2010-11 Series

"Australia have been highly stable for a long period of time that it was clear who was going to open the innings, who was going to bat, what bowlers there were, and they lack that certainty now. It closely resembles a comparable scenario to the 2010-11 period when England traveled and emerged victorious. The reality is the Aussies typically need to underperform to lose in Australia and England have to be very good. England have a great chance of being very good and the Australians face a real possibility of being bad."

Team Decision for England

A major issue for the English camp remains their selection at the number three position, with Ollie Pope and Jacob Bethell contesting the spot. Alastair Cook, whose 766 runs set up the visitors' series victory 15 years ago, thinks it would be "unusual" for Ben Stokes’ side to abandon Ollie Pope, who has been a consistent at number three for the past three seasons.

"I'd select Pope at number three," said Cook. "I think it’s quite an easy choice. You’ve got someone who’s been part of this buildup for three or four years. He has led the team, he’s played remarkable performances for England and he’s a hundred-maker. He knows how to make big scores in the domestic game. If they drop him now, I think that alters the entire balance of what they’ve built up over the recent years."

While hailing Bethell as "an incredibly talented player", Cook said: "It would be a big, big gamble [to pick him] because should it fail what is the fallback option, someone you’ve just got rid of? They’ve invested so much in people like Ollie Pope and [Crawley that it would seem highly odd to change it now."

Captaincy Change and Commentary Crew

Pope has been succeeded by Harry Brook as the team's deputy skipper but, according to Cook, that will "take the pressure off" the Surrey right-hander.

"The management has acted decisively on that, considering in case of an injury to Stokes, they’ve got a guy in Brook who has taken the [captaincy of the] one-day side and it's evident that he seems to be a natural fit. This will relieve Pope. I believe it won't weaken his position. Certainly it will have hurt him because anytime you get taken off a leadership role it wouldn’t be ideal, but I don’t think it diminishes his standing."

Alastair Cook will be in Australia as part of TNT’s coverage of the Ashes, and will be accompanied by former Ashes champions Steven Finn and Swann as in-studio analysts. The network will provide its own audio feed but will operate a hybrid model, with commentators Alastair Eykyn and Hatch to work off-site in the UK, while Cook, Finn and Swann provide co-commentary from on location. Rainford-Brent is also part of the broadcast team operating remotely, with the live presentation to be presented by Ives.
