Astronaut Reveals Depression Following Deluge of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured celebrity crewmates.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.

She portrayed the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the personal milestone of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of misogyny.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following fulfilling her dream, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had come out of the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a brief suborbital flight that exceeded the Kármán line of space.
