A charity drive is aiming to send a traditional song from Palestine to the Christmas number one spot. The effort hopes to deliver assistance to Gaza's residents while also highlighting Palestinian cultural expression.
Musician and artist Brian Eno, who features on the track, stated that the song titled Lullaby represents a moment to stand with Palestinians over the Christmas period. He remarked the potential for an unexpected chart success.
“It would be fantastic if that happened, yes,” he commented. “I won't be completely disappointed if it doesn't manage to, Christmas singles are a thing unto themselves.”
Palestinian singer Nai Barghouti, who sings on the reimagining of a traditional lullaby called Yamma Mwel El Hawa, explained the piece's resilient spirit.
“It occupies a deeply meaningful spot for countless listeners,” Barghouti said. “The message is that I would choose to perish with honor than exist without freedom. That is the core idea of the song; we desire to exist a life of dignity that we are entitled to as Palestinians.”
The song was recorded after a large-scale benefit event held in September. First conceived to be done as a live recording, the performance was shelved during the concert due to scheduling overruns.
The impressive roster of performers appearing on Lullaby encompasses a range of prominent voices from the scene. All took part in the September show, which successfully generated a considerable total for charitable causes.
Lullaby was brought to life by a team of talented individuals. The single features a fusion of the traditional Arabic lyrics with new English lyrics.
The organizers behind the project have emphasized that their objective is to generate maximum funds for a specific fund. These donations will be channeled to projects in Palestine through an established charity.
“We haven't set a specific target,” a spokesperson commented. “We’ll go for whatever we can get. Naturally, the more the merrier. All proceeds are directed out to the people of Gaza.”
The context in the region was characterized as its widespread damage, with a huge proportion of buildings described as in ruins or severely impacted.
“Given that reality, a few million doesn’t make that much difference. But I think the significant factor is first of all making this cause better known and demonstrating that another narrative exists.”
The song is launching on Friday. Additionally, a full recording of the benefit event will be made available for streaming on a digital service from later in the month.
