Lawmakers from the Democratic party voiced outrage after former President Donald Trump alleged a group of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and declared they should be detained and punished "through capital punishment" following their release of a contentious video.
The recorded message, shared on earlier this week, includes six Democratic elected officials who previously acted in defense or security capacities.
"As we did, you all made an pledge to protect and support this national charter," the officials stated in the 90-second video. "At present, the risks to our governing document aren't just from foreign nations, but from domestically. Our statutes are clear, you can reject improper directives, you can decline improper directives, you must reject unlawful commands. No one has to carry out directives that violate the statutes or our constitution."
The video message reportedly provoke a heated reply from the former president.
On the following morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our Nation should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In another post, he wrote: "This constitutes really bad, and Risky to our Nation. Their comments cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a additional post, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a combined declaration censuring the statements.
"Partisan aggression has no role in the United States," they wrote. "Representatives who appeared in the video all served our nation with exceptional national pride and excellence. We unequivocally denounce Donald Trump's appalling and dangerous death threats against members of Congress, and call on GOP representatives to forcefully do the same."
The party representatives also mentioned that they had been in contact with security officials "to guarantee the security of these representatives and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away delete these unhinged digital publications and recant his violent discourse before he leads to violence," the declaration added.
The lawmakers who participated in the video also released a response.
"We identify as veterans and national security professionals who value this United States and took an vow to safeguard and uphold the national charter of the United States," they declared. "That oath lasts a lifetime, and we plan to honor it. No warning, pressure, or incitement will stop us from that fundamental duty."
"The significant point is that the president deems it subject to penalty by capital punishment for us to restate the legal requirements," they stated. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their backs as they carry out their pledge to the national charter and responsibility to obey only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our obligation."
They continued: "The entire nation must come together and censure the ex-president's calls for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a time for principled stance."
The Opposition leader also censured Trump's remarks and shared on online networks: "We must be absolutely clear: the former president is demanding the death of elected officials."
He continued: "This represents an direct THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, the entire nation – without partisan consideration – should denounce this immediately and without qualification."
The Republican House speaker supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", commenting: "This represents very risky, you have leading members of the legislature instructing military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents unprecedented in US history."
The Republican leader also reportedly told media outlets that in what he read of Trump's posts, Trump was "explaining the offense of rebellion" but that "lawyers have to examine the language and decide all that."
During a White House press conference on that day, when questioned by a reporter, "Does the president want to put to death congressional representatives?", the executive branch representative replied: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the president is addressing," the representative declared. "There are active officials of the federal government who coordinated to orchestrate a recorded statement to individuals of the national defense, to current military personnel encouraging them to ignore the executive's proper directives."
She stated: "The purity of our military depends on the command structure, and if that system is compromised, it can result in people getting killed, it can lead to disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are fundamentally supporting."
