Figures from both sides of the partisan spectrum and the entertainment industry are uniting to censure former President Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the shocking passing of renowned director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump took to social media to label the late director as "tortured and struggling". The message, he asserted Reiner's death was "due to the anger he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable affliction with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".
Police have since announced the detention of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the incident. Reports indicate his bond was set at a significant sum.
The reaction to Trump's post was swift and harsh.
This is a disgusting and despicable comment,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, also criticized the statements. She referenced prior rhetoric from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"
California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a disturbed man."
Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a contemptible piece of garbage."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."
A number of Republican lawmakers also voiced dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". Greene also alluded to challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being some families face.
Fellow Republican congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged members in his political party to defend the statements.
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a previous interview, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the presidency. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"There is authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a danger that democracy collapse around the world."
Regardless of his strong criticisms, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence unequivocally following the shooting of a different individual.
Providing a element of past connection, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the story of the session, mentioning Trump's request for "special hairspray" as posing on a skyscraper with a view of Central Park.
