Larian Studios Details Its Implementation of Generative AI for New Project

The studio behind acclaimed titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin has recently shown its new project, sparking significant excitement within the industry. However, recent statements from the company's figurehead have introduced clarity to the conversation, focusing on the developer's philosophy toward generative artificial intelligence.

AI as a Creative Assistant, Not a Substitute

In a recent message, Larian's director detailed that the developer is utilizing machine learning for specific preliminary purposes. These involve enhancing pitch decks, producing early-stage concept art, and writing draft text.

Importantly, Vincke stressed that the final content in the game will be authored entirely by actual artists. "Larian is writing all the content manually," he stated.

Larian is continuously expanding our roster of concept artists and are currently forming narrative groups.

Given that visual development is being particularly called out — we currently have 23 visual developers and have roles to fill for additional talent.

Each initiative we do is additive and aimed at having people spend greater focus on actual creation.

Any machine learning application applied correctly is supplementary to a developer's workflow, never a stand-in for their talent.

  • Long-Term Aspirations: Exploring how machine learning could one day enhance new forms of player agency, specifically in managing unforeseen permutations in a vast role-playing world.

He specifically noted that core creative disciplines — like music composition — are are absolutely not fields where the team is reducing artistic input. On the contrary, Larian is expanding its staff in these exact positions.
