The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, announced by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-part season created by the show's creator starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the network.
Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the show's renewal. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together next year."
The previous series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been widespread for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.
The seventh season begins with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, according to production details.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and under these circumstances, these officers are assigned their "most delicate case to date."
An additional officer, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for takedowns of criminal networks, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.
Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, plot details suggested.
Speaking about the renewal, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."
"It's an honor to have had so many followers watch the ups and downs of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh season."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in this country is supposed to have ended while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Martin Compston called appearing in the police drama as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the program's popularity but the people I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.
Vicky McClure stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. The city, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor noted: "While anticipating the AC-12 days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."
The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting notable actors such as Lennie James.
The BBC haven't revealed exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.
The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the search for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no plans for additional seasons.
However, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
