New Year Partygoers Urged to Dress Warmly with Wintry Weather Predicted Throughout the UK

Forecasters are saying a frosty start to the new year, with snowfall expected throughout a lot of the UK. Those celebrating are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.

Festive Celebrations Continue Despite Forecasts

Edinburgh's iconic Hogmanay festivities are set to go ahead, following last year's calling-off. This comes despite yellow warnings for snow over northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those partying, so additional clothing will be necessary," noted the national forecaster.

Displays Under Open but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and good visibility. Readings are forecast to be low, making extra layers a necessity, according to forecasters.

In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for watching fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.

Extensive Snow Warnings for New Year's Day

Moving into Friday, snow alerts have been issued for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Forecast to Drop Even More

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are set to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are likely to affect the north of the country.

About 10cm of snow could accumulate to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Warnings Issued

In addition, amber-level health advisories have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with readings likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Officials stated this signified the weather was expected to lead to significant impacts across health and social care services. This includes a likely increase in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
