The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... At the Moment.

The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that his new science-fiction series would turn into a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”

Now that Season 1 of the acclaimed series reaching its finale—and a second season greenlit and underway—the writers' room recently discussed the fan response and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.

About the Tremendous Fan Response

It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and fan theories about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to steer clear of all that.

“It feels like force fed something incredibly sweet and being in a state of bliss,” he describes. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it from others, and that's by design. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a bottomless pit I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“It is not our goal to change the plot,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”

“Better to keep our focus on the work,” Gilligan adds.

A Pressing Query: Has the showrunner Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?

Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by fan response, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… in a way.

“There are some potential directions about where the show might end up,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to discard a solid concept for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I imagine we will be doing that.”

Alternatively, if plans fall through, Gordon Smith has a humorous idea to use as a backup.

“I constantly suggest that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”

Alternatively, why not reference the iconic TV endings?

“I'd love for Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.

Pluribus can be watched on Apple TV+.
