The original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben & Jerry's has announced how corporate owner Unilever prevented the introduction of an innovative Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.

Ben Cohen, that established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he plans to personally create the controversial flavor within a personal series showcasing issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from speaking out about.

Longstanding Dispute Between Creators and Parent Company

The recent development intensifies the continuing conflict between the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the British consumer goods corporation which has owned the ice cream brand for over two decades.

Both founders have claimed that the parent company and their ice cream division Magnum improperly prevented Ben & Jerry's against "honouring its social mission".

Watermelon Sorbet becoming a Symbol of Solidarity

The entrepreneur announced through social media how he is creating a new watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions regarding the product's name and potential ingredients.

“I'm doing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen commented in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”

This particular fruit has become a symbol of solidarity with Palestinians because of its coloration, which closely resemble those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.

Historical Social Engagement plus Current Developments

In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, leading to Unilever selling the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thus allowing continued sales in the occupied West Bank.

This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist dessert company that was first created several years back to support ex- US presidential candidate Senator Sanders via the flavor "Bernie's Back".

Management Changes plus Future Intentions

Mr. Cohen stated that he will create other frozen dessert varieties focusing on concerns that the company was prevented from speaking about openly by Unilever.

This development comes after partner Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company recently, following many years of involvement, citing concerns regarding how its independence was undermined following Unilever's decision to curb their advocacy work.

Previously, Mr. Cohen remarked how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."

"My heart leads me to keep working within the organization to advocate for corporate autonomy ensuring that the company can actualise the social mission, the values that established its foundation and has maintained for decades," he told journalists.
