The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors after the World War II era.

However, Mamdani, for whom rent control is a key platform, did not confirm his residency plans immediately after his victory in November.

"This decision rested on keeping my family safe and the need to directing my full attention on implementing the affordability agenda New Yorkers elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

His home was in the Queens borough of Astoria, an area renowned for its vibrant cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To my neighbors in Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"While I may no longer live in the neighborhood, it will always live a part of me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

Political Debate

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

However his rivals, including one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for remaining in the rent-stabilized unit despite the fact that he is from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, kept his residence in his personal mansion on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his time in office, which ended in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for official events, and advocated for significant upgrades of the older mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings far removed from his previous Astoria apartment.

With its cream-colored walls, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home situated by the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is furnished consistent with the home's early 19th-century origins.

The estate, which is said to has five bedrooms, also boasts fortified protections to protect the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the partner of ex-mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was even more convinced. "No matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city regulates on how much property owners can hike the monthly cost each year.

City residents view rent-stabilized housing as valuable lifelines as the cost of housing exceeds what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
