Israelis have come together throughout the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-conducted attack on 7 October 2023, as negotiations continued in Egypt over a conclusion to the hostilities in Gaza.

The assault saw in excess of 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for Jews since the Second World War.

Israel answered by beginning a armed campaign in Gaza which has taken over 67,000 people, as reported by the territory's Hamas-controlled health ministry. Its figures are regarded as reliable by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our violent enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.

He also promised to "realize all the goals of the war: the return of all the kidnapped, the elimination of the Hamas government and the promise that Gaza will never again pose a threat to Israel".

Memorial Ceremonies Across Israel

The government authorities postponed state commemorations until mid-October - after the end of the Jewish High Holiday season - but events still occurred around the country on that day.

A remembrance service for the relatives of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was held in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli broadcast stations.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was observed around the country.

Ceasefire Talks in Egypt

Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' delegations met in the Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el-Sheikh for a second day of mediated discussions to examine the terms of the plan.

A senior Palestinian official knowledgeable about the negotiations revealed that an evening round of indirect talks commenced at 7 PM local time.

The official stated the day's discussions ended without concrete outcomes, due to disagreements over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas demands to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the opening period of the arrangement.

He noted that the negotiations are "tough and have not yet produce any major advancement," but pointed out that facilitators are working hard to narrow the differences between the both parties.

Critical Points in Negotiations

  • A permanent halt to fighting
  • The swap of the captives still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The pullout of military personnel from Gaza
  • Arrangements for relief supplies provision
  • Future management of the territory

Citizen Feeling

In the city's public square that day, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother endured the assault on the outdoor event, where 378 people were killed and dozens more were captured by Hamas militants - told: "Nowhere appears as home any longer and until all the hostages return none of us will feel safe."

"When we see everybody home returned, we can feel relief again. Then we can commence heal," she concluded.

In front of the prime minister's residence in the capital, people gathered to show their solidarity for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states forty-eight continue in confinement in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Protester one woman remarked: "We must do any agreement necessary for the captives to be released. But we really want guarantees that we will be secure."

Surveys now frequently demonstrate that around 70% of Israeli citizens prefer the conflict to conclude in return for the freedom of the captives.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of the gathering, mourners came together to pay their respects.

From there, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be heard just a few kilometres away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli attacks continued.

In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the dawn of that day in the west side district, sector and Nasr areas and in the eastern district of Sheikh Radwan, as well the camp to the northwestern area.

"Once the dusk arrives, the anxiety comes with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose teenage son was died by an Israeli aerial attack previously, explained.

"My family are fearful of the bombings. All the night we are resting together, clinging, particularly my little child who puts his face on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we check the reports to see developments. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be achieved and that the war will come back to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

The healthcare center in the urban area reported it had taken in the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three who lost their lives in an Israeli strike in the south part area.

Nasser hospital in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said another two victims had been brought there. An individual was died by Israeli troops while looking for help to the south region, medics stated.
