The Reason Los Blancos Possess 'Utter Trust' in Teenager Thiago Pitarch

Thiago Pitarch in action
The teenager has featured in seven matches for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

Whenever a teenage makes club history in a crucial European match against City, it inevitably draws acclaim and the spotlight.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first-leg advantage at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the qualifying round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English champions in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a quarter-final place.

Aged 18 years old, the midfielder was the club's youngest player to start twice in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vini Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a strong impression.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who took over from the previous coach in January.

Reports would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," noting Pitarch excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, personality and determination he brought to the team.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Personality'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the senior squad and awarded him playing time during pre-season.

However, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the turning point in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I began playing the game, every day you go to train and every day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his debut.

"I have just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the world and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opening.

The teenager has seized it with performances that have defied his youth and experience.

"He's a extremely fast player, and you can see his capabilities," remarked the coach. "He is extremely energetic, with great endurance, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his manager.

"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand people are astonished to watch him start in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had complete trust in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will keep receiving chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a player like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, moving through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.

He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan nationality, giving him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.

Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at youth level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they play in a competitive full international.

Pitarch has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, representing both the U19 and under-20 sides, and took part in the 2025 Youth World Cup, where La Roja made it to the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with keen attention.

In a recent interview, Pitarch confirmed: "I haven't made my ultimate choice yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."

His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Lamine opted for La Roja, Diaz opted to represent Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, Pitarch's focus is on establishing himself in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.

He featured for 74 minutes in the 2-1 victory at the Etihad, which completed a 5-1 aggregate success and a last-eight matchup with the German champions.

He was replaced by another academy player in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to aid the team pursue trophies to come.

Following his notable contributions so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to be a central figure in that.

"The manager treats me the same. We deal with it very normally. I try not to think about it too much - I must earn my playing time on the pitch," he commented following the success at Etihad Stadium.
