Trinidad and Tobago Provides US Military Use to Its Airports As Growing Tensions with Venezuela

The government of Trinidad and Tobago has confirmed it will permit the United States military to access its airports shortly. This move occurs amid mounting geopolitical friction between the US and nearby Venezuela.

New Defense System Fuels Controversy

This statement comes after the installation of a sophisticated radar system at an airport in Tobago. National officials have insisted the radar's primary purpose is for curtailing illegal operations, asserting it is not a springboard for offensive actions against another country.

Skeptics argue, however, that the partnership risks pulling Trinidad and Tobago into former President Donald Trump's broader political strategy against Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

Scope of Agreement and Government Explanation

As per a foreign affairs statement, US use at the airports would be for logistical support, facilitating supply replenishment and standard troop rotations. The statement did not elaborate beyond this.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has in the past commended US airstrikes targeting alleged drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific, strikes that have allegedly resulted in dozens of fatalities, including several Trinidadian citizens.

Initial Claims and Subsequent Revelations

Initially, Persad-Bissessar claimed a US C-17 aircraft arriving in Tobago was transporting marines to support a local road construction project. Yet, when pictures emerged of the radar installation, she acknowledged that no fewer than 100 marines were stationed in the country, accompanied by the powerful radar.

The radar, thought to be a long-range AN/TPS-80 G/ATOR, is marketed as air surveillance, defense, and artillery detection capabilities.

Trinidad and Tobago lies extremely close from Venezuela at their narrowest separation. The country has main international gateways: Piarco International in Trinidad and ANR Robinson International in Tobago.

The airport access agreement follows a prior event in October, when a US warship docked in Trinidad's capital, signaling the Trump administration's ramped-up military posture on Venezuela.
