Zelenskyy States Russia's Leader Initiated Talks Following Cruise Missile Proposals

Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated during his visit to Washington that Vladimir Putin's move to seek negotiations with the US president demonstrates Moscow is feeling pressure. Zelenskyy commented, "We can already see that Moscow is scrambling to restart conversations as soon as it learns of Tomahawks." This statement addressed recent musings about providing advanced weapons to Ukraine.

Political Developments and International Reactions

A former American diplomat, a foreign policy expert, commented, "The Russian leader is trying to derail the momentum toward increased pressure on Russia." Fried continued, "The outcome will become clear tomorrow, but the likelihood of moving toward a ceasefire by pressuring Russia to engage sincerely appear to have decreased."

The development came after the US president had in recent days been hardening his language toward Russia until the recent conversation with the Russian president, which the Kremlin described as "highly frank and trustful."

EU Energy Restrictions and Market Impact

The European Union have set a mandate for fuel suppliers into the European Union to prove their products are not made from Russian oil, according to a official guideline published on Thursday. This measure is included in the European Union's upcoming prohibition on imports of refined products processed from Russian petroleum, which is included in its 18th sanctions package against Moscow over its war in the region.

Financial analysts noted that trading patterns appeared to be factoring in the possible reduction of India's imports of Russian oil. Several Indian refiners are preparing to cut Russian oil imports, with projections of a gradual decrease, as reported by insiders familiar with the matter.

"This represents a positive development for the oil market as it would eliminate a major buyer of Russian oil," commented a market analyst, adding that oil prices were stable on Thursday.

Military Developments and Infrastructure Strikes

A large-scale Russian unmanned aircraft and rocket assault targeted gas facilities in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, causing disruptions in multiple areas. Authorities in Ukraine reported that Russian forces deployed hundreds of drones and many of projectiles, along with glide bombs.

"During this fall, the Russians use every single day to attack at our energy infrastructure," said Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding that attacks affected the regions of northern Ukraine, eastern Ukraine, Poltava, Sumy and Vinnytsia.

International Diplomatic Reactions

Kyiv's envoy to Washington, the Ukrainian ambassador, stated that Moscow showed its true approach to negotiations through the "terror" of such strikes. At the same time, the EU's top diplomat, the bloc's representative, announced that the European Union had little option but to build up anti-drone defences against Russia. She revealed a "roadmap" to get ready for potential conflict by 2030, including a novel defensive network to be fully operational by the end of 2027.

The proposed system, dubbed the "EU defensive program," is expected to begin working initially by the end of 2026 and be completely operational by the end of 2027. Brussels hopes to secure the backing of EU leaders at a meeting next week.
